Carbon-pack Cylindrical Battery
Li/SOCl2 carbon-wrapped batteries have been made to a cylindrical shape that conforms to the ANSI standard. These batteries are designed for low and medium discharge rate discharges and must not be discharged above the C/100 rate. They have a high specific energy. For example, an ABLE D-type battery has a 15.0 Ah capacity with 3.5 V of voltage released. The traditional alkaline zinc/manganese dioxide battery can only release a capacity of 15 Ah at a voltage of 1.5V.
(1) The structure negative electrode is made of lithium sheet and leans on the inner wall of the stainless steel shell: The separator is made of non-woven glass fiber cloth: the positive electrode is composed of PTFE-bonded carbon black and has a cylindrical shape with extremely high Porosity, and occupy the bulk of the battery. The battery is a gas-tight structure, while the positive pole is a glass-metal sealed insulator. These low self-discharge batteries can be equipped with a safety valve, but they can also be without safety valves, which is determined by the manufacturer according to the battery structure.
(2) Performance The open circuit voltage of the Li/SOCl2 battery is 3.65V; the typical operating voltage range is between 3.3V and 3.6V (to a termination voltage of 3V). Discharging at a low to medium discharge rate over a wide temperature range, ABLE Li/SOCl2 has a flat discharge curve and excellent performance, and can work well at extremely high temperatures.
